Subtly hilarious, charmingly absurd and sometimes downright terrifying,
Training for the Apocalypse is not just fascinating. It’s incredibly entertaining.
With a topic of this nature I think an easy trap would be to emphasize the seriousness and disregard the humor. But this gem of a documentary – directed by the incredibly skilled Rob von Alkemade – doesn’t do that. Instead it walks the fine line of being highly informative and subtly hilarious with every keen observation it so poignantly makes. The cast of characters you will be introduced to are impossible to make up. No team of writers could create such hysterically awkward family dynamics or disturbing life missions. Do yourself a favor and watch this documentary. And be quick! Dec 22nd, 2012 is just around the corner! 😉

Hugely engaging and educational documentary. Well worth the money!,
I watched this documentary on Nat Geo when it came out and just bought it on amazon so I could watch it again. This documentary follows a few individuals who are preparing for the end of days. While many producers would choose to sensationalize what is already a rather sensational topic, this film was cut to give real insight into the minds and lives of the people involved. The viewer is left to decide for themselves whether or not such extensive precautions are really worthwhile and what to really think about people spending so much of their resources on these preparations. The individuals followed in this film are treated with respect and allowed to tell their own story. The documentarian has done a great job to let the legacy of these people be left in their own hands. It is also hugely informative, I really did learn a lot about this particular subculture of people. I didn’t even know they existed before! It’s rare that I’ve been so engaged by a documentary. Well worth the money! You won’t regret it.

Educational and entertaining!,
This was a great documentary that successfully managed to be serious, educational, and highly entertaining all at the same time. I learned a bit about all the different considerations people go through when thinking about survival in a world without modern conveniences, while also being drawn in by the human elements – sometimes inspiring and sometimes hilarious. The film is as much about individual characters and their progression as it is about their preparations and beliefs on an what most of them consider an inevitable apocalypse. Enjoy!
