Since 1973, magnesium bar fire starters have been around. A simple, waterproof, arguably unbreakable, fire starter that can get hot enough to light wet tinder. The bar can produce many shavings to make quite a few fires. Here though, is possibly the only downfall to the magnesium bar: making the shavings. It takes awhile and one has to be very careful not to allow all the shavings they have scraped off to scatter to the wind. Can it be done? Of course, I myself have done this many times on my bug out adventures, but it did get me thinking on how one could improve upon the design. Hence I bring you the Improved Magnesium Bar. The Logo Contest Is Officially Over
The new logo/banner has been up for a couple of weeks now and I’ve received some favorable emails and comments about it. There were quite a few good entries and it was a tough decision, but eventually I narrowed it down to three and then finally the winner, which you see along the top of the site. Above is the banner and here’s what I’ll use as the logo: The winner’s name is Kyle and prefers to remain anonymous, but my man, thank you for a great logo and banner! I’ll be sending the GPS unit out shortly and I hope you like it as much as I like the new look. In case you…

When I was a kid, I remember we would go up to my …
It’s Winter – Don’t Go Hiking Without Proper Clothing!
It’s winter here in Maine and that means it’s pretty cold out there. As I write this at 9:15 pm on Wednesday evening the temperature outside is 3 degrees F. Not unusual for this time of year. Hiking, snow shoeing, winter camping, ice climbing, skating, sledding with the kids, it’s all part of the winter experience for me. The first time I took Mrs Jarhead on a winter mountain expedition it was -22 F. when we left the bed and breakfast in Western Maine. B&B? I was …

Today’s post is from the guys over at JM Bullion.com. They’re a new sponsor and asked if they could write a post for ya’ll about their products. I think the topic is important enough to give them a chance. So here you go! -Jarhead Survivor ——————— Survivalists as a whole are generally advocates of placing some of your wealth into physical gold and silver bullion. The reasons for this are many, namely: Hedging against inflation Storing wealth in case of a fiat currency crisis Accumulating a potential currency for the future The bullet points above have been hashed over countless …
