I have been keeping myself busy up here in Whitehorse since I last gave an update.
I made it onto the front page of the Yukon News because of a chance picture of me flying through the air on a boulder problem at a local Bouldering competition (rock climbing):
Another day I tried my hand at ice climbing for the first time. This was on an artificial waterfall that was made at the same place with the hot springs (Takhini Hot Springs). It was a lot of fun. I want to invest more time and money into it, but at the moment I have too much on my plate… But next winter for sure, as I am dying for more climbing up here in the winter:
Going ice climbing for the first time was a really great experience, but what I have been most excited about since coming up here is to try my hands at back-country snowboarding. I just couldn’t imagine how awesome it would be to ski your way up a mountain face, and then snowboard down. In order to do this, you have to invest in a special kind of snowboard, called a split board, that is essentially a normal snowboard cut in half. Once in half, it can act as skiis. With ‘skins’, you can ski up a hill without sliding down. Then, you remove the skins and put the board back together. Then you snowboard down and repeat the process. I was able to go for the first time in January, with friends Marty and Annie (Annie is also the friend I summitted Mt. Lorne with on my third day in Whitehorse):
As you can probably tell, I have invested a lot of my new money from my new job into gear. Well I didn’t stop after the splitboard. I also got myself a pair of snowshoes with adjustable backcountry ski poles. I went for a solo hike just behind the Whitehorse Hospital recently. The hike itself is to Long Lake, where it travels around the lake and then back. It was probably about 12km in total:
