8 reasons why Shell can’t be trusted in the Arctic

Should we trust them with the Arctic? Shell’s most recent ‘mishap’ a few days ago was not the first setback the oil giant has suffered in its plans to drill for oil in the Arctic. In fact, it’s the eighth in a growing list of reasons why Shell should not be trusted in the Arctic. 1. Shell has no idea how much an oil spill clean-up would cost In March 2012, in response to questions from the UK’s Parliamentary Environmental Audit Committee, Peter Velez, Shell’s head of emergency response in the…

Shell’s Arctic oil rig hits the rocks

All rights reserved. Credit: US Coast Guard More evidence that we cannot let Shell drill in the Arctic Image caption: More evidence that we cannot let Shell drill in the Arctic In yet another example of just why drilling for oil in the Arctic is such a monumentally bad idea, Shell’s drilling rig, the Kulluk, has run aground off the island of Sitkalidak, near Kodiak in Alaska. The ancient rig was being towed back to harbour after a spectacularly unsuccessful summer drilling season when it ran into serious trouble and hit the shore.Last Thursday the Kulluk was being towed back from the Arctic by Shell’s brand new $200m tug the Aiviq when it hit heavy weather in the…

America’s Biggest Killers: The Chart Anti-Gunners Don’t Want You To See

What we are hearing from bloviating gun control advocates in America is nothing short of emotionally driven irrationality.According to statistics assembled from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Center for Disease Control and the Federal Government, firearms related homicides are minuscule in comparison to other the other “big killers” in the United States. If we look at homicide statistics in the United States it’s clear that more murders are committed with knives, bats, hammers and poisons than with firearms. As Kurt Nimmo recently noted, “ the number of murders committed annually with hammers and clubs far outpaces the number of murders committed

Postscript: Doomsday May 21, 2011

May 21, 2011 has come and gone nearly everywhere in the world and the world has not been ravaged by earthquakes nor have any Christians been gathered up by the Rapture, at least not that any of the mainstream media have reported. That’s one less prophet to worry about now. I do feel sorry for those who have been duped by their faith in this man. To err is human, after all.

Robopocalypse (2011) novel

Here we go again: robots (intelligent machines) revolt and begin the extermination of humanity. Haven’t we had one too many doomsday movies on this theme already? I guess if its a meme, a formula and it works, why not. Daniel H. Wilson gives his novel Robopocalypse an authentic touch since he has a PhD in robotics from the Carnegie Mellon Robotics Institute and had previously publish a non-fiction guide called How to Survive a Robot Uprising, possibly modeled on Max Brooks’ 2003 handbook The Zombie Survival Guide: Complete Protection from the Living Dead. According to this report from The National Post, The story is set no more than a decade in the future, and at the centre of it all is Archos, a…

2012 Ice Age (2011) TV movie

2012 Ice Age from 2011 has to be one of the worst disaster TV movies ever made. A massive series of volcanic eruptions in Greenland causes an ice shelf to detach and head to North America “really really fast.” Those pesky glaciers seem to have a mind of their own. Canada gets hit first by this icewall turned glacier that seems to disobey the laws of physics every minute. The scientist father of the family, played by Patrick Labyorteaux, can’t seem to figure things out. His stock answers to questions from his wife and son about what’s happening around them are phrases like “I don’t know”, “maybe”, “it’s possible”. This TV movie is so bad it’s actually worth watching, from the …

Beware the supercollider network, for it will destroy the world or at least a good chunk of it. Annihilation Earth, a 2009 TV movie filmed in Bulgaria for the Syfy network, stars Marina Sirtis (you may remember her as Deanna Troi from Star Trek: The Next Generation TV series and movies) and Luke Goss. The basic plot is that the terrorist attack on a global network of supercolliders creates a black hole inside the Earth. Of course there’s no known science that can stop a black hole from consuming all mass and energy around it, so you can probably guess how this ends.

The Mist (1980) novella

Stephen King’s 1980 novella The Mist, originally published as a short story of the same title and later a 2007 movie, contains a far bleaker ending than what was depicted in the movie, though that too was pretty horrific. The movie pretty well follows the novella up until the point at which the group of characters including the “hero”, David Drayton, leave the supermarket to try and escape. The impression you are left with in the novella is that The Mist has enveloped all of Massachusetts and possibly even more of the New England states so that the end of the world may very well be at hand. The Mist is in many ways a precursor to Stephen King’s epic novel Under the…

Seattle Superstorm (2012) TV movie

A Soviet Union Cold War experiment gone bad may spell not only the end of Seattle, Washington, but also the world in the 2012 apocalyptic thriller Seattle Superstorm. First broadcast in Canada on April 7, 2012, this TV movie gives new meaning to the phrase, The family that fights the apocalypse together, stays together. Not only were the effects about as believable as those in many 1950s and 1960s mutant monster movies from Hollywood and Japan, but the plot was atrocious and the acting just passable. Not to give away too much, but how was it that the key Soviet scientist involved in the experiment just happened to turn up in Seattle the day the orbiting craft carrying a…
