A unique design that really works!,
The short version:
I bought this gun safe because it solved my issue of having limited mounting options, while retaining the quick access through electronic entry. The other safes I found online of similar size with electronic entry could not be mounted (in the space I had) in a way that didn’t block either their door or keypad, or they were simply too big for what I needed. Overall, I am very happy with this gun safe.
Pro’s:
– Design and flexibility in mounting options. Why didn’t someone think of this sooner?!
– Foolproof programmable electronic entry with a physical key backup
– Nice white internal floodlight
– You can turn the electronic keypad “beep” sound on/off
– When mounted using bigger hardware (that you supply), the safe feels rock solid
Con’s:
– The mechanical whining noise as the electronic latch locks/unlocks isn’t quiet
– The white internal floodlight might be too bright for some people
– The “L” mounting bracket needs more screw hole options for securing it to wood stud walls
– Should come with longer wood screws for secure mounting
– Low battery warning only works if you touch a keypad button
The long version:
As previously mentioned in another review, the steel used in the safe is about 1/16 of an inch thick with a flat black textured finish, and is comprised of 3 main pieces (the “L” mounting bracket, the safe box which also houses the electronics (requires a 9 volt battery, not included) and locking mechanism, and the safe door). The locking mechanism, which can be opened using the programmable electronic keypad or one of the included physical keys, works very well and doesn’t leave many spots where someone could quickly pry the door open. This safe certainly isn’t “bomb” proof, but it should defeat an individual who is trying to get-in-and-get-out of your place.
The safe is easy to mount, and can be mounted in one of three positions (against its left, right, or back side) using the included “L” bracket and hardware (I recommend buying longer screws). Be aware, if you’re securing the bracket to a wood stud in a wall, only 2 of the 4 screws will enter the stud, the other two will overhang the stud (the bracket is wider than the typical 2 inch wood stud, so only the screws on one side of the bracket can go into a stud – again, buy bigger screws if you plan on mounting the safe to a stud wall) After the “L” bracket is installed, the safe attaches to the “L” bracket using the included thumb screws. Once the safe is installed, the mounting hardware is covered by the safe, preventing someone from simply unscrewing your safe from the wall and taking it with them.
The 4 grey external rubberized buttons with raised numbers are easy to find and press without looking. Each button press is followed by a brief “beep” (which you can turn off) and a flash from a small external green/red LED light mounted above and between the “1” and “2” buttons. Programming the safe is easy (definitely read the directions all the way through first), and you can use a 3 to 6 number combination. The safe will enter a “sleep mode” and lockout the keypad for 2 minutes if the correct combination isn’t entered within 24 key presses – any additional key presses during that 2 minute period makes the safe beep three times and the LED to flash a red light. A tamper detection feature allows you to see if someone tried to gain access the safe since it was last opened. Finally, when the battery gets low and a key is pressed, the safe will beep softly and the LED will flash red seven times.
When the safe is unlocked using the keypad, there be a long beep (again, you can turn the “beep” off) and the external LED will stay green for a couple of seconds as the safe makes a noticeable but short mechanical whining noise while the electronic latch is released. As the door drops open, a bright internal white LED flood light turns on which illuminates the inside of the safe (along with anything in front of the safe), and the door is stopped quietly by a spring and rubber bumper mounted behind the door. Closing the door turns off the internal white LED flood light and you hear the same short mechanical whine as the motorized latch reengages.
The inside of the safe has a dense grey foam material that has a pre-cut cavity, along with vertical slits, to accept handgun barrels of various sizes and securely hold them in place. The sides of the steel door, and the grey foam, are cut back so that the grip portion of the gun is exposed (when the door is open) and allows for quick retrieval of the gun. A full size (5 inch barrel) 1911 fits just fine, but a longer or taller gun may not.
This safe would be perfect if it didn’t make so much noise during the electronic lock/unlock process, but I don’t think it’s any louder than most other electronic safes made by GunVualt. It would also be…

Not a safe but does exactly what I want it to.,
I picked this up because I have a daughter that just started to walk. I like to keep my gun close and ready in my night stand but then I was afraid she could find it so I put in up high in the closes but then I had no quick access. My plan was to mount it on the side of my nightstand between my bed and nightstand. I went to the hardware store and picked up some nuts/bolts and washers because I feel the small wood type screw that came with it would pull out much quicker then either prying it open or breaking the night stand. As some reviews have said it is not a thick case and I feel it will not keep it safe if some one really wants it. BUT for my reason of just keeping my kid (and soon to me another) out of it while still maintaining fairly quick access I believe does the job to the T.
It would be a 5 star if it was a thicker case and added more security rather then feel it could be pried open relatively easy.( The security it provides is still better then just leaving open in my draw). I say easy, I Believe a large screw driver and a hammer I think could open in with in 3-4 mins.
I did purchase this Item form Amazon. I ordered on a Tuesday afternoon it shipped Wednesday morning and I received it that Friday. Very Satisfied with the entire process. (It also had free shipping)

Poor Quality,
I just received my SV500 thinking I would mount it in my truck for quick safe access on the road, but after seeing it for the first time, I have to say, I’m disappointed in the quality of the product.
The steel is very thin for something that is supposed to protect my handgun, about as thick as a DVD. It seems that a heavy screwdriver could pop the door without too much trouble.
The fit of the door is terrible as well, it doesn’t ride on a track to keep it stable, so it has a lot of play and rattles with just a little movement. That rattling would drive me crazy.
I do like the 9v battery, and fairly easy battery access, it’s much better than the electrical system their other GunVault models.
I just don’t know if I can trust this unit.
I really wanted to like this, just wish the construction was better and the steel heavier. I own two other Gunvaults, the GV1000 and the larger GV2000D that seem sturdier and much better constructed.
All in all, it doesn’t seem worth the price paid. I may just return this and try to find something else.
